Arturo, italienischer Dirigent, * Parma 25. 3. 1867, ✝ New York 16. 1. 1957; war zunächst Violoncellist u. a. an der Mailänder Scala (Mitwirkung bei der Uraufführung von G. Verdis »Otello«, 1887) und debütierte 1886 in Rio de Janeiro als Dirigent. 1898-1903 und 1906-08 leitete er die Mailänder Scala, war 1908-15 Dirigent an der Metropolitan Opera in New York und 1921-29 erneut Direktor der Mailänder Scala. 1928-36 leitete er das New York Philharmonic Orchestra, 1937-54 das NBC Symphony Orchestra. Außerdem dirigierte er 1930-31 bei den Bayreuther und 1934-37 bei den Salzburger Festspielen. Toscanini mied dann Deutschland und Italien und lebte als Gegner des Faschismus in den USA. Seine Interpretationen - er war berühmt als Beethoven-, Wagner- und v. a. Verdi-Dirigent - zeichneten sich durch zügige Tempi, äußerste Präzision und mustergültige Klarheit aus. Er dirigierte bei den Uraufführungen u. a. von R. Leoncavallos »I Pagliacci« (1892) und G. Puccinis »La Bohème« (1896), »La fanciulla del West« (1910) und »Turandot« (1926).
